The question comes up in almost every consultation

We are asked to compare uPVC and aluminium windows constantly — and we supply both, so we have no commercial reason to favour one over the other. What follows is our honest assessment based on fifteen years of installation and maintenance work in the UAE.

The honest answer is: aluminium is the better long-term choice for most UAE residential applications, but uPVC is a legitimate option in specific situations and at lower price points. The differences matter more here than in Europe.

How the UAE climate changes the equation

In a Northern European climate, uPVC is an excellent material. Temperatures are mild, UV exposure is moderate, and the expansion and contraction cycles the frame experiences are within the tolerances of a well-made uPVC profile.

The UAE is different. In summer, a south-facing window frame can reach 80°C+ on its external face. uPVC expands at roughly three to four times the rate of aluminium over the same temperature range. In a frame that is well-designed for this, with adequate expansion gaps and the right hardware clearances, this is manageable. In a frame that is not — and many budget uPVC products imported into the UAE are not — the result over time is warping, seal failure and hardware that no longer operates correctly.

Profile strength and design freedom

Aluminium is structurally superior to uPVC at the profile level. This means aluminium frames can be made thinner, carry larger glass panes, and span wider openings without requiring steel reinforcement in the core. A premium aluminium system like the Cortizo Cor 70 has a visible sightline of 42mm on a casement window. A comparable uPVC frame is typically 80–100mm — nearly twice the visible frame width.

For a villa with large openings, floor-to-ceiling glazing, or a modern architectural style, the visual difference is significant. uPVC naturally suits smaller, more traditional window formats.

Thermal performance: closer than you think

Here, uPVC has historically had an advantage. The material itself is a poor conductor of heat, meaning there is no inherent bridging between the outer and inner faces of the frame. Aluminium, by contrast, conducts heat readily — which is why thermally broken aluminium systems (with a polyamide insert in the profile) are essential for UAE applications.

With a quality thermally broken aluminium system, however, the thermal performance gap narrows considerably. The Cortizo Cor 70 and Gulf Extrusions TB600 series both achieve thermal transmittance values comparable to mid-range uPVC, and both carry the hardware precision and longevity that uPVC cannot match in the long term.

Our recommendation

For principal windows and doors in a UAE villa, aluminium is the right long-term choice. The structural performance, the design flexibility, the durability in extreme UV and heat, and the long-term hardware performance all favour aluminium. The premium over uPVC is real but is recovered in longevity and lower maintenance over a 15–20 year horizon.

For secondary applications — service areas, utility rooms, budget residential developments where cost is the primary constraint — uPVC from a quality manufacturer (not budget import products) is a legitimate specification. The worst outcome is a cheap uPVC product installed in a prominent UAE location by a contractor whose warranty will not be honoured five years from now. If the budget forces a uPVC choice, choose the manufacturer and installer as carefully as the specification.
