Aluminium Window Finishes UAE: Powder Coat, Anodising and Woodgrain Explained

The three standard finishes for aluminium windows

Aluminium window and door profiles are supplied from the extruder as bare mill-finish aluminium — a dull silver metal. Before installation, every profile must be finished to protect against corrosion and to achieve the desired colour. In the UAE market, three finishing systems are in common use: polyester powder coating, anodising, and woodgrain effect laminate film.

Each system has different cost, durability, maintenance requirements, and available colours. The choice matters — once installed, re-finishing a window in situ is not practical. The finish you specify is the finish you will live with for the lifetime of the installation.

Powder coating: the standard for most UAE projects

Polyester powder coating is the dominant finish in the UAE market. The aluminium profile is cleaned, pre-treated with a chromate or chrome-free conversion coating, and then electrostatically coated with dry polyester powder before curing in an oven at 180–200°C. The result is a hard, uniform finish available in any RAL or BS colour, including satin, gloss, textured, and metallic variants.

For UAE residential projects, the most popular powder-coat colours are RAL 9016 (traffic white), RAL 9006 (white aluminium — a light silver-grey), RAL 7016 (anthracite grey), RAL 7035 (light grey), and RAL 9005 (jet black). The QUALICOAT standard governs powder-coat quality — all Swiftrooms profiles are coated to QUALICOAT Class 1 minimum, which specifies minimum film thickness, adhesion, and weathering resistance.

One important consideration in the UAE climate: dark powder-coat colours — particularly RAL 9005 black and RAL 7016 anthracite — absorb significantly more solar heat than light colours. In a direct western or southern exposure, dark aluminium frames in direct sunlight can reach surface temperatures exceeding 80°C. This is not a structural concern for the aluminium itself, but it accelerates the rate at which sealants at the glazing rebate and frame joints degrade. For highly exposed elevations with dark colours, we recommend specifying a QUALICOAT Class 2 coating, which has a higher UV and weathering resistance.

Anodising: the premium choice for coastal locations

Anodising is an electrochemical process that converts the aluminium surface into a layer of aluminium oxide — hard, porous, and integral to the metal rather than applied on top. The anodised layer is then sealed to close the pores and prevent corrosion. Unlike powder coating, anodising does not peel, chip, or delaminate, because the finish is the metal itself.

Standard anodised colours for UAE projects are natural anodised (a warm silver-grey with slight metallic sheen), champagne (a light golden tone popular in traditional and transitional interiors), dark bronze (a deeper warm brown that complements sandstone and travertine), and black anodised. Bright colours are possible through dye injection before sealing, but are uncommon in UAE architectural specifications.

Anodising is the preferred finish for projects within approximately 500m of the sea — Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah Beach Residences, Abu Dhabi corniche, Saadiyat Island, and Ras Al Khaimah coastal projects. In salt-laden environments, powder-coat films can degrade at the edges of profiles and at cut ends over 15–20 years. An anodised finish provides superior corrosion resistance in these conditions. For projects more than 500m inland, either finish is appropriate and the choice is aesthetic.

Woodgrain laminates: warmth without the maintenance

Woodgrain effect laminates are factory-applied film wraps bonded to powder-coated profiles. The base profile is powder-coated in a neutral colour (typically a grey or brown), and then a high-pressure digitally printed film — reproducing the grain pattern of oak, walnut, teak, or other timbers — is heat-bonded to the outer face of the profile.

Woodgrain laminates are popular for garden rooms, conservatories, and interior bifold or sliding door applications where clients want the warmth of a timber aesthetic with the low maintenance and thermal performance of aluminium. They are not recommended for profiles that receive direct, prolonged UV exposure on south or west elevations — the laminate film will fade and lift at the edges over 8–12 years in intense UAE sunlight. For sheltered internal applications and shaded elevations, a good-quality woodgrain laminate will perform well for 15+ years.

At Swiftrooms, we offer woodgrain laminates on selected product lines including our garden room and bi-fold door ranges. Colours include golden oak, dark oak, rosewood, and anthracite woodgrain. Sample chips are available in our Jebel Ali showroom.

Colour matching and custom RAL colours

All Swiftrooms powder-coat finishes are available in any RAL colour at no surcharge on standard projects. For exact colour matching to a specific paint, tile, or material reference, we can supply a wet paint reference number or a physical sample chip to our coating partner for a custom match — this carries a small premium and a minimum-area requirement.

If you are specifying windows and doors to match an existing building element — a stone façade, a metal balustrade, or a specific paint from a manufacturer's range — supply us with a physical sample or the paint manufacturer's reference at the enquiry stage. We will confirm achievability before the order is placed.

Maintenance: what each finish requires

Powder-coated aluminium should be cleaned every 6–12 months in the UAE, using warm water and a non-abrasive detergent. Avoid solvent-based cleaners, which can attack the powder-coat film. Sand and dust accumulation at the rebates and drainage channels should be cleared with a soft brush. Inspect the sealant at the glazing bead and at any junctions with masonry annually — UV degradation of the sealant is the first maintenance item to address.

Anodised aluminium should be treated similarly — warm water and mild detergent, flushed with clean water. Do not use bleach, acid, or alkaline cleaners on anodised surfaces; these attack the anodise layer. In coastal environments, rinse the frame faces with fresh water monthly to remove salt deposition.

Woodgrain laminates should be cleaned with mild soapy water only — avoid abrasives, which will scratch the film surface. Do not use petroleum-based solvents near the laminate edges, as these can soften the adhesive at the film boundary.
