Retractable Insect Screens UAE — Choosing the Right System for Your Doors

Why retractable, not fixed?

In the UAE, insect screens serve a different purpose than in temperate climates. The challenge is not primarily flies — it is mosquitoes in the evening months (October to April) when temperatures allow natural ventilation, and sand and dust throughout the year. A fixed screen on a lift-and-slide or bi-fold opening defeats the entire purpose of the system: you install a 4-metre wall of glass to open the living space to the garden, and then close it off permanently with a grey mesh grid.

A retractable screen solves this by deploying only when needed. When you want the view and the air, the screen retracts into a compact cassette at the side or head of the opening — completely invisible from inside. When the evening mosquitoes appear, the screen deploys across the full opening width with a single pull.

Single-panel vs pleated bi-directional systems

Single-panel retractable screens work on a spring-loaded cassette principle, similar to a roller blind. The mesh panel retracts into a slim aluminium cassette when not in use. These are highly reliable and suited to openings up to 2,400mm wide and 3,000mm tall. For openings up to 1,800mm wide, a single-panel system with magnetic closure is the most cost-effective and durable option.

For wider openings — common on lift-and-slide doors in UAE villas — a pleated bi-directional screen deploys from both sides simultaneously, meeting in the middle. Each panel is independently spring-loaded, and the panels lock together with a magnetic closure at the join. This system handles openings up to 4,800mm and is the standard solution for wide lift-and-slide configurations. We offer this system in multiple mesh densities: standard 18×16 fibreglass mesh for insect screening, or a finer 20×20 pet-resistant mesh for households with dogs or cats.

Compatibility with your door system

Retractable screens are not universally compatible with all door systems — the cassette must be housed within the depth of the door frame or the structural reveal, and the guide channel must be continuous from head to sill. For lift-and-slide doors, the screen cassette is typically surface-mounted to the side jamb within the reveal; for bi-fold doors, a head-mounted system is usually more appropriate as it avoids conflict with the fold-and-stack panel.

For casement windows, single-panel retractable screens mounted to the side hinge jamb are the standard solution. The screen deploys across the opening when the casement is open — and must be retracted before the casement can be closed. Mesh specifications

Fibreglass mesh is the standard for residential UAE applications. It is PVC-coated, non-corrosive in salty coastal environments, and easy to clean. Standard 18×16 mesh (18 threads per inch horizontally, 16 vertically) provides effective mosquito screening while allowing good air flow — approximately 48% open area. For improved dust management, a finer 20×20 mesh reduces open area to 44% but provides better particle filtration.

Aluminium mesh is sometimes specified for high-end applications where the rigidity of the mesh is aesthetically preferred. It is more expensive and less forgiving of impact damage, but will not distort or sag over time as a fibreglass mesh may if not tensioned correctly.

For screening against sandstorms (shamal events), a standard insect screen is not effective — it will simply become clogged with fine sand and impede air flow. The appropriate response to sandstorm conditions is to close the doors and windows fully. Screens are for insect management in normal ventilation conditions.

Maintenance and cleaning

Retractable screen systems require minimal maintenance. Clean the mesh annually with warm water and a soft brush — soap can leave a residue that attracts dust, so plain water is preferable. The guide channels should be cleared of sand and debris monthly to prevent abrasion of the mesh edge seals. The cassette spring tension is factory-set and does not require adjustment under normal use; if the panel fails to retract fully, check that the guide channels are clear and the mesh is not snagging on any debris.

In coastal UAE environments (particularly Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah waterfront, and Palm Jumeirah), the aluminium cassette and guide channel extrusions should be wiped with a mild detergent solution every three months to prevent salt accumulation. Anodised aluminium finishes are recommended over powder coat for applications within 500m of the sea — they provide better corrosion resistance in salt-laden air.
