The Complete Glass Specification Guide for UAE Homes
Solar control, low-e, laminated, tempered, triple glazed — the glass market is full of terms and competing claims. Here is a plain-language guide to what actually matters in a UAE climate.

Why glass specification matters more than the frame
Most glazing conversations in the UAE start with the frame system — the profile, the brand, the colour. These things matter. But for thermal performance, acoustic performance and long-term comfort, the glass unit inside the frame has at least as much influence as the frame itself.
A premium aluminium system with cheap glass will underperform a standard system with a well-specified glass unit. This guide explains the key choices you will encounter when specifying glass for a UAE residential or commercial project — and what to look for in each.
Solar control glass: the most important specification for the UAE
In a UAE summer, solar radiation through unprotected glass can contribute more heat to a room than the air-conditioning system can remove. This is not a theoretical concern — it is the practical experience of thousands of villa owners across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Solar control glass works by applying a metallic or metal-oxide coating to one surface of the glass. This coating selectively reflects the infrared and ultraviolet components of solar radiation while allowing visible light to pass through. The key figure to assess is g-value (also called solar factor or SHGC): the fraction of solar energy that passes through the glass. A g-value of 0.25 means 25% of solar radiation enters the room. Standard clear float glass has a g-value of 0.87.
For UAE residential applications, we specify glass with a g-value between 0.20 and 0.35, depending on the orientation and shading of the elevation in question. South and west-facing glass in direct sun typically needs the lower end of this range. North-facing glass, or elevations with significant external shading, can use higher g-values without compromising comfort.
Low-e coatings and thermal transmittance
Low-e (low emissivity) coatings are a different coating type that reduces the U-value of the glazing unit — the rate of heat flow through the glass. In the UAE context, where the primary concern is keeping heat out rather than in, low-e coatings are most relevant in their combination with solar control properties.
Modern solar control glass typically incorporates low-e properties in the same coating — so specifying a high-performance solar control glass usually delivers improved U-values at the same time. Look for a combined specification: for example, SGG Planitherm One from Saint-Gobain or equivalent, specifying both solar factor (g-value) and U-value (Uw) for the glazed unit.

Laminated vs tempered: safety and security
All glass used in hazardous locations — floor-to-ceiling panels, glass within 300mm of floor level, glass adjacent to doors — must be safety glass. In the UAE, this typically means either tempered (toughened) glass or laminated glass.
Tempered glass is heat-treated to increase its strength and to cause it to break into small, relatively harmless fragments rather than dangerous shards. It is the standard choice for most residential applications and is supplied as standard in all Swiftrooms aluminium door and window systems.
Laminated glass bonds two or more panes with a PVB or SGP interlayer. It does not shatter on breakage — it cracks but stays in the frame. This makes it superior for overhead glazing (skylights, roofights), anywhere where falling glass would be dangerous, and for security applications. In acoustic glazing specifications, laminated glass delivers the best performance at a given glass thickness.

Double vs triple glazing in the UAE
Triple glazing is commonplace in Northern Europe, where retaining interior heat through cold winters justifies the additional weight and cost. In the UAE, the case is less straightforward.
Triple glazing improves U-value compared to double glazing, but the practical thermal benefit in the UAE is smaller than it sounds. UAE buildings are primarily concerned with heat ingress from solar radiation — which is addressed by solar control coating, not by adding a third pane. The marginal improvement in U-value from triple versus high-performance double glazing is small in the context of overall building heat load.
There are UAE applications where triple glazing makes sense: ultra-high-performance specifications targeting LEED or Estidama Pearl ratings, specialist acoustic applications, or commercial buildings with high internal heat loads requiring maximum envelope performance. For standard residential applications, a well-specified double-glazed unit with high-performance solar control coating is the right call — simpler, lighter, and offering equivalent comfort outcomes at lower cost.
